Q2. Dating tips
Spend 10% of the time talking about your own hobby or career interests, 10% talking about the other person's interests, and the other 80% talking about general topics such as events around the town, overseas, etc
Try to be on time. If you make an agreement to meet someone it's not polite to be more than 5 minutes late.
Things not to do:
Avoid talking about other people of the opposite sex, i.e. avoid mentioning other females if you are male, and avoid mentioning other males if you are female.
Don't ask the other person justify why you should be there or raise other issues related to yourself.
Don't mention particularly heavy topics such as marriage, children, etc.
Don't ask excessively personal questions such as about the other person's previous relationships.
Q3. I'm new to online dating. How does it work?
In your own city
Start by creating a profile. You can do this by clicking 'Create a Profile' on the home page.
Once you have created a profile you can search for members from the 'Search' screen.
When you find someone you like send them a 'kiss', which is an automatic message letting the person know that you would like to make contact with them.
You may also receive kisses from members who have noticed your profile.
Dating Tips
We suggest that you avoid asking questions about the person's life and past. Look for topics that interest you both.
Interstate and overseas
Academic Dating has members from all over the world.
You might meet interesting people from different cultures and maybe even develop a relationship.
We suggest that you initially follow the usual process of sending emails and kisses.
When you are ready to get to know the other person, we suggest using an Instant Messaging system such as Yahoo Messenger.
This is a great way to get to know a person who is overseas.
Q4. Continued membership of the site
Please be polite to all members.
You do not have to accept an invitation to dinner or some other social meeting.
The purpose of the site however is to meet other people so you should not reject offers of contact as a direct part of your membership.
Members should not be abusive or write without consideration of the person that they are writing to.

Q6. How well does it work?
Online dating has proved to be a very successful way of meeting people.
Many people have made lifelong friendships from people that they met through dating sites.
Others find their lifetime partner.
Many marriages in the modern world began through sites like this one.
Q7. What are the benefits of Academic Dating?
The website is fast and easy to use.
We focus on the future not the past. There are no questions about your past, only about yourself and your desires for the future.
We don't include the functions of other dating sites that we don't belive in, such as popularity contests and editorial control of profiles.
Academic Dating is cost-effective. The site is free to use if you are a light user. If you are a frequent user of the site it is still low-cost, such as US 20 cents to send an extra 'kiss' message.
Q8. Are there any age restrictions?
You must be at least 18 years of age to join this site.
Q9. Is my privacy protected?
Yes. No-one will know any information that can identify you including your name, telephone number, address or email details until you know a person and are comfortable revealing these details yourself.
We do not release any of your information to third parties.
Q10. What about security?
Many people are nervous about meeting someone online and this is a natural reaction. Meeting someone new can be nerve-wracking enough without the additional unknowns of the online world.
However, online dating has proved to be a very safe way of meeting people and we are not aware of a serious incident ever having occurred in this way.
Before agreeing to meet someone most people only reveal their first name and sometimes a mobile phone number.
Obviously you will meet in a public place such as a cafe or bar. If you don't feel comfortable with the person then there is no need to see them again.
Q11. Should I post a photo?
We highly recommend that you post a photo of yourself. Some people are shy about this and that's natural. However, a photo is an important part of gaining an impression of a person and you are likely to have far more success with the site if you have a photo listed.
Q12. What is my 'Primary Photo'?
If you have several photos stored on the system, your 'Primary Photo' is the one that will appear in the search results screen. You can change your primary photo in the 'Manage Photos' screen.
Q13. What are the restrictions on profiles?
Your profile is yours and you can write anything you like in it, with minimal restrictions. Obviously nasty, racist or offensive comments are not allowed. Also, contact details such as email addresses and telephone numbers are not allowed.
Please note that Academic Dating is a social and relationship site. Sexually explicit material is not allowed in profiles.
Q14. What is a 'kiss'?
A 'kiss' is an electronic message that you send to another member to let them know that you have noticed their profile and would like to make contact with them. On receiving a kiss, the member can then chose a reply. The member may also chose to send you an email, or they may request that you send them an email. You can decline a kiss if you are not interested in the person.
Q15. The system is calculating my age incorrectly
There are a large number of international date formats in use and it can be difficult for the system to interpret them correctly. Please enter your birthdate in one of the formats dd/mm/yyyy, mm/dd/yyyy or yyyy/mm/dd with a full 4-digit year and select the date format that you have used from the 'date format' list.
Q16. Where is Academic Dating based?
Academic Dating is an international site. We welcome people from all countries of the world. The site is administered in Sydney, Australia, and is hosted on servers in New York.

Q19. What are 'Credits'?
You may join Academic Dating for free.
However, depending on your membership type, you may need to purchase 'credits' to send messages to other members.
Credits cost $US 80 cents each. You will need to spend one credit to send an email to a member, and 0.25 credits to send a 'kiss' message.
Once the first email is sent, further emails between you and that member are free.
For more details of the charges see click here
Q20. Does the site support foreign languages?
There is limited support for foreign languages. At present the site material is all in english, and support is only available in english. However, you can enter foreign language text into profiles, and also into email messages.
Q21. What do I need to know about scams
Most people on dating sites are genuine. Unfortunately, professional scammers also operate on the internet.
Scams usually fall into one of two categories - 'Business Scams' and 'Romance Scams'.
Business scams generally involve a long letter outlining a situation where millions of dollars have been trapped in a bank account and the writer needs your help to liberate them, in return for a large commission.
If a stranger offers you a business proposition involving millions of dollars, it is a scam. Do not respond to the email. It can be dangerous to become personally involved. Please delete the email and inform site administration immediately.
Romance scams involve false emotion and love followed by requests for money.
In this case also please inform site administration.
Q22. I'm having a problem using the website
If you are having technical problems please email enquiries@academicdating.net and we will try to respond to your message within 24 hours.

Select 'Edit your Profile' on the front screen and change the password at the bottom of the profile page.
Q25. Security when going on dates
Internet dating involves meeting people that you might know little about and security is an important issue.
We recommend that you stick to the following principles.
Only meet people that live in the same city as yourself.
Give out only your first name, and possibly a mobile phone number (optional).
You might not want to let the other person know your surname, home telephone number or home address until you have been on at least one date together.
Meet in a place with other people around, such as a shopping centre, restaurant etc.
If you feel uncomfortable it's best to say that you have to go, and not return the other person's email messages after that meeting.
Q26. I have a general enquiry
Please email enquiries@academicdating.net and we will try to respond to your message within 24 hours.
